The Need For Healthy Teeth

Jul 25 • 2 minute read

We are going to look at the relationship between home care and healthy teeth. The body requires maintenance and needs to be taken care of. Teeth are one of the vital things in the body that needs total care no matter what. Everything that enters the body through the mouth has to go passed the teeth. The mouth is a portal to the rest of your body, and there is a relationship between your overall health and the health of your mouth.

Why Is The Care Of The Teeth Important?

There are various reasons why the teeth need to be taken good care of at all times. Sometimes, people who do not have a good set of teeth do not feel comfortable opening their mouth and lips to let out a smile in public. Beyond just cosmetic reasons, the health of your mouth is a direct reflection of your overall body’s health.

Your quality of life can be vastly improved by taking care of your teeth and avoiding minor to severe dental issues. For example, if you lose teeth, your bite may become misaligned which could create eating and speaking problems. Missing teeth is also a potential indication of oral health problems that can create other medical issues including heart disease, diabetes, oral cancers and more.

How Do You Attain Healthy Teeth?

There are various ways to care for the teeth, and some of them are;

•    Brushing Regularly:  Dentists recommend a minimum of brushing two times daily and a maximum of three times daily. This must also be done every day of the week, and not once or twice in a month. When brushing your teeth thoroughly, you are getting rid of food items that have stuck to the teeth. When you are brushing you are advised to use softer bristles as the rough ones can cause damage if they are used with too much force.

•    Flossing: Flossing aids in the removal of food and build-up that has been stuck in-between teeth. Dentists recommend the use of flossing to remove unwanted food items from the mouth immediately after eating. Flossing has also been shown to prevent bad breath, gum disease and tartar build-up. Flossing and brushing are a strong foundation to dental home care.

•    Mouthwash: Mouthwash can be used side-by-side with brushing, but not regularly in order not to damage the walls of the mouth. A mouthwash is used to drain unwanted and stuck food items in the teeth and give the mouth a clean and fresh breath. Mouthwash is effective in the fight against tooth decay and gingivitis. It can also be used to help strengthen the existing enamel on your teeth or to prevent the future development of cavities.

•    Water-pick: The use of water-pick is similar to flossing. A water pick is a good option for those that have trouble getting the floss in-between certain teeth.

•    Diet: Eating healthy is a good way to prevent certain dental problems. A good diet in regards to your oral health is one that is calcium-rich. Calcium-rich foods (soy drinks, tofu, salmon, cheese, yogurt, etc.) promote strong teeth and bones. Also, phosphorous found in fish, meat and nuts is helpful in strengthening your teeth.
